Iowa mother's criminal defense plans unclear

Charges for child endangerment were recently filed against an Iowa mother. According to police, she left the country while her four children remained at home without adult supervision. Charges involving minors are taken understandably seriously by law enforcement officials, and establishing a solid criminal defense can be crucial for either maintaining or regaining custody of involved children.

Police claim that the mother planned a 12-day trip to Germany to visit her brother and niece. She had allegedly tried to arrange childcare with family members, but after none of them were able to do so she indicated that she had found other arrangements. The children -- 12-year-old twins, a 6-year-old and 7-year-old -- were instead left at home, presumably with the eldest two in charge of their younger sisters.

The father of the two younger children became suspicious that childcare had not actually been arranged and reported this to police. When authorities arrived at the home the mother had been gone for approximately 24 hours, and at least one of the twins was preparing dinner for the younger siblings. Police also claim that the mother left an unsecured firearm and ammunition that was easily accessible. All four children were removed from the home and placed in the care of relatives, and the mother was arrested after returning home early from the trip.

Faced with four counts of child endangerment and one for transferring a firearm to a minor, she has since posted bail and claims that the allegations are not true. However, whenever criminal allegations involve children, defendants in Iowa are usually well-advised to be proactive with their criminal defense preparations. Whether this means negotiating a plea deal or preparing to fight the allegations throughout the entirety of trial court proceedings, preparing early can help achieve the best possible outcome.
